If this sounds like the unlikely and sentimental plot from a feelgood movie then you may be looking into the future of Andrew Coleman.
Young boy born in Liverpool. He is blind. Parents take him for 16 operations in first 3 years but sight is only restored to 10 percent in one eye. But young Andrew has a gift and a dream. The gift is a beautiful unique voice: the dream is to become a famous singer.
12 tough years in Liverpool later, dad gives up his job as a chef at the Adelphi, buys a second hand Moris Minor for £60, buys Andrew a £2 shiny jacket from the Oxfam shop and they hit the road.
Over 500 gigs at every working man’s club and pub in the North East later, they try for a talent TV show but Andrew gets kicked off because he can’t see.
But . . .
As luck would have it a beautiful young girl jazz saxophonist called Lysha spots Andrew on the talent show and calls her friend and legendary record producer Robin Millar, the man behind the Sade phenomenon. Whaddya know, Robin is blind too! ‘Yuh right!’ you say.
For the next 18 months Andrew and Robin work together in their spare time on building and developing Andrew’s piano and songwriting skills and record an entire brilliant album at Robin’s own studio in London. This is also about Andrew’s growth and independence as a person as he struggles with trains and cabs and London to fulfil his dream.
Robin calls up his music biz friends and they all flip over Andrew, calling him the new Elton John.
